welcome to haven
The focus at our farm is on holistic and regenerative practices that nurture the land, value quality over quantity and support endangered, heritage varieties. We use lots of traditional methods in all we do and will offer opportunities for people come spend time on the land to see how we raise their food. We are located on a precious eighty acres of Carolinian forest and meadow, adjoining a conservation area and abundant with life. The land and air feel a little different down here: dewy and warm, fragrant with tulip trees and sassafras. We are frequently met with visitors on the farm: opossum, deer, coyote, wild turkeys, bald eagles, countless songbirds and rabbits, turkey vultures and a covey of grouse inhabiting the south bank of our pond. It’s hard not to be inspired by the incredible diversity of life flourishing here. We hope it will become a haven for people who love amazing food, care about how that food is raised and want to support local, organic growers.
“now is the time to get on with the important task of building food sovereignty by creating more diversified, resilient, people-centered food systems that foster local/regional supply chains, close ties between farmers and eaters, more equitable distribution of food producing resources, and ecological sustainability. We are at a turning point — let’s get it right this time and engage in food system transformation that fosters equity, helps cool the planet, and better protects us in times of epidemic or pandemic emergencies”. (Concentration Matters: Farmland Inequality on the Prairies, Desmarais, A.A., Qualman, D., Magnan, A., & Wendimu, M., Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, November, 2020.)
We couldn’t agree more. Welcome to haven.
We use the fruit, veggies, eggs and chicken we raise to create hand-made, small batch prepared foods, available in limited quantity for purchase here at the farm, at our market stands and in our virtual market.
Learn along with us in workshops with guest experts on topics such as composting and vermiculture, mushrooming and wild food foraging. We will also host events centered around seasonal offerings from the land. Maple sugaring in late winter, cherry blossoms in spring and the abundance of fall harvest: all offer opportunities to pull together a growing community of people interested in participating in the place where their food is grown.
